For the second straight season, the Premier League is represented in the UEFA Champions League by the same four clubs – Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United. Groundhopper Soccer Guides is tracking their match schedules, progress, and opponents in this post.
Chelsea are looking to defend their Champions League title after defeating Man City in the 2020-21 final. All four clubs finished in the top-four of the Premier League last season to qualify for the Champions League again this year.
The four Premier League teams enter the tournament during group stage action, which begins September 14-15 and runs through December 7-8. Each team will have six games in this round, consisting of a two-game series against the other three teams in the group.

What is the UEFA Champions League?
The Champions League is the club championship of Europe, the most prestigious football competition in the world other than the World Cup. While the World Cup is contested every four years, the Champions League is played every season.
The 2021-22 edition of the Champions League is the 67th season and the 30th since it was renamed from the European Champion Club’s Cup.

Chelsea Champions League History
The defending Champions League winners, Chelsea will be making their third straight appearance in the tournament and 18th overall. Dating back to 2003-04, Chelsea have played in the Champions League 17 out of the last 19 seasons (they missed the cut in 2016-17 and 2018-19).
Last year, Chelsea claimed their second Champions League title (the first was in 2008) by defeating Manchester City in the final, 1-0, in Porto, Portugal. Three minutes before halftime, Chelsea’s Kai Havertz scored the game’s lone goal.
Liverpool Champions League History
Liverpool will be competing in the Champions League for the fifth straight year, and the 12th time overall. Liverpool have raised the Champions League trophy six times (the fourth-highest total of all-time), most recently in the 2018-19 season after defeating Tottenham 2-0.
Manchester City Champions League History
Manchester City will be making their 10th straight appearance in the Champions League, a far cry from Real Madrid’s all-time record of 25 consecutive appearances which dates back to 1997-98.
City will take part in the tournament for the 17th time overall. Their previous streak of seven straight years occurred from 1985-86 to 1991-92. The club made its first appearance in the Champions League final last season, falling to Chelsea.
Manchester United Champions League History
For the second straight year, and the fourth time in the last five, Manchester United will take part in the Champions League. The club has enjoyed much success in the league since the turn of the century, making 18 straight appearances (from 1996-97 to 2013-14) and claiming titles in both 1998-99 and again in 2007-08.

UEFA Champions League Schedule
The group stage will be played out until early December, with the draw for the knockout phase taking place on December 13, and those games being played in February and March.
The last draw into the eight-team bracket will be March 18, with the quarterfinals taking place in early April and the semifinals April 26-27 and then May 3-4.
The Final will take place in Saint Petersburg, Russia on May 28, and the winner automatically qualifies for next season’s Champions League group stage.
