Premier League teams in the 2021-22 Champions League Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United are among the teams competing to reach the final in St. Petersburg.

For the second straight season, the Premier League is represented in the UEFA Champions League by the same four clubs – Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United. All four clubs advanced to the Round of 16 after placing in the top two during group stage action. Groundhopper Soccer Guides is tracking their match schedules, progress, and opponents in this post.

Chelsea are looking to defend their Champions League title after defeating Man City in the 2020-21 final. All four clubs finished in the top-four of the Premier League last season to qualify for the Champions League again this year.

The four Premier League teams entered the tournament during group stage action, which ran from September 14 through December 8. Each team had six games in this round, consisting of a two-game home and away series against the other three teams in the group.

The competition is now in the knockout round, as each Premier League club will play a two-game series against another team to find out who advances to the quarterfinals.

The Champions League is the club championship of Europe, the most prestigious football competition in the world other than the World Cup. While the World Cup is contested every four years, the Champions League is played every season.

The 2021-22 edition of the Champions League is the 67th season and the 30th since it was renamed from the European Champion Club’s Cup.

Premier League Clubs’ Group Stage Opponents in the 2021-22 Champions League

Here are the final tables for each group with a Premier League club.

Group A

Man City finished atop the group with 12 points, followed closely by PSG with 11, and both have advanced. RB Leipzig has seven points, and Club Brugge four.

Group B

Liverpool easily won the group, and finished with a perfect 18 points. They were the lone team to win all six games, and posted a goal differential of +11 (17 scored to six conceded). Atletico Madrid will also advance, after placing second with seven points. Porto was third with five points; AC Milan last with four.

Group F

Man U took the group with 11 points, followed by Villarreal with 10, and both advanced. Atalanta was third with six points, while Young Boys had five.

Group H

Chelsea was the lone Premier League club to not win their group, but still finished second to advance. Juventus was on top with 15, while Chelsea was second with 13. Zenit had five points for third, while Malmo only managed one tie in six games.

UEFA Champions League Round of 16

Liverpool beat Inter Milan, Manchester City beat Sporting of Portugal, Chelsea beat French champions Lille, and Manchester United were eliminated by Atletico Madrid.

UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals

In March and April, Chelsea were knocked out by Real Madrid, Liverpool beat Benfica of Portugal, and Manchester City defeated Atletico Madrid.

UEFA Champions League Semifinals

In April and May, Liverpool beat Villarreal and Real Madrid beat Manchester City.

UEFA Champions League Final

The Final between Liverpool and Real Madrid will take place in Paris on May 28, after it was moved from St. Petersburg, Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. The winner automatically qualifies for next season’s Champions League group stage.

Chelsea Champions League History

The defending Champions League winners, Chelsea are making their third straight appearance in the tournament and 18th overall. Dating back to 2003-04, Chelsea have played in the Champions League 17 out of the last 19 seasons (they missed the cut in 2016-17 and 2018-19).

Last year, Chelsea claimed their second Champions League title (the first was in 2008) by defeating Manchester City in the final, 1-0, in Porto, Portugal. Three minutes before halftime, Chelsea’s Kai Havertz scored the game’s lone goal.

Liverpool Champions League History

Liverpool are competing in the Champions League for the fifth straight year, and the 12th time overall. Liverpool have raised the Champions League trophy six times (the fourth-highest total of all-time), most recently in the 2018-19 season after defeating Tottenham 2-0.

Manchester City Champions League History

Manchester City are making their 10th straight appearance in the Champions League, a far cry from Real Madrid’s all-time record of 25 consecutive appearances which dates back to 1997-98.

City will take part in the tournament for the 17th time overall. Their previous streak of seven straight years occurred from 1985-86 to 1991-92. The club made its first appearance in the Champions League final last season, falling to Chelsea.

Manchester United Champions League History

For the second straight year, and the fourth time in the last five, Manchester United are taking part in the Champions League. The club has enjoyed much success in the league since the turn of the century, making 18 straight appearances (from 1996-97 to 2013-14) and claiming titles in both 1998-99 and again in 2007-08.

Man United made the Europa League final last season after failing to make it beyond the group stage of the Champions League.
