Premier League Schedule and the 2022 World Cup
With the 2022 World Cup schedule set for November and December instead of the traditional summer, what does this mean for the 2022-23 Premier League schedule?
The 2022 World Cup dates are November 21 to December 18 — weeks in which the Premier League and FA Cup schedules would normally be full of games.
To adjust for this, the 2022-23 Premier League season will start one week earlier than usual, on the weekend of August 6, 2022. There will be 16 game weeks until the weekend of November 12-13, then there will be a pause for the World Cup.
The World Cup final will be played on December 18, and the resumption of the Premier League season will be on Boxing Day (December 26).
That means there will only be an eight-day break between the 2022 World Cup final and the restart of the Premier League schedule.
The final day of the Premier League season will be May 28, 2023.
The 2022-23 Premier League season, then, will start a week earlier, and end a week later, than the 2021-22 Premier League season.
World Cup 2022 Calendar: Winter Instead of Summer?
Since the World Cup first took place in 1930, the world’s premier soccer event has been held during the summer months after the European domestic leagues have concluded their seasons.
Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup back in 2010, and due to the extreme summer temperatures, the event was moved to a November and December timeline. The daily temperatures in Qatar in June and July average 106 degrees, and rarely fall below 100. In the last two months of the year, the daily high temperature average is closer to 80F.
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, as it is officially known, is also the first to take place in an Arab country, the second to be held in Asia, and the last one to have only 32 teams. The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, will expand to 48 teams.
