Club Profile

Inter Milan

Since their formation in 1909, Inter Milan have won 35 domestic trophies, including the second-most league titles at 19 (tied with AC Milan), nine Coppa Italias and seven Supercoppas. They also have three Champions League trophies, back-to-back in 1964 and 1965, and again in 2010. The main supporter group is called Boys-San (Boys-Squadre d’Azione Nerazzurre), and dates back to 1969, one of the oldest to support a football club.

NICKNAMES: Since the club’s founding, Inter Milan have always worn black and blue stripes, earning them the nickname Nerazzurri (The Black and Blues).

History

The club was founded when AC Milan was split into two clubs in 1908, after a disagreement on signing international players, hence the reason why Inter Milan is also called Internazionale. The first team trophy was raised in 1910.

The first Italian Cup trophy came in 1939, led by the iconic Giuseppe Meazza for whom the San Siro stadium is officially named.

From 2006-10, the club won five straight Serie A titles. The Italian team trophy was raised again in 2020-21, as Inter Milan ended Juventus’ run of nine consecutive Serie A titles with their first in 11 years.

The 2009-10 season will go down as one of the greatest campaigns for Inter Milan, and many would argue the greatest season of any Italian club. Inter Milan collected all three major trophies (winning three trophies in a regular season is called a treble) under famed coach José Mourino: the Champions League, Serie A, and the Coppa Italia.

Rivalries

Not only do they share the city of Milan, but Inter and AC Milan also share a stadium and an intense rivalry on the field. The yearly matchups are called the Derby della Madonnina. The name of the derby refers to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose statue is one of city’s main attractions.

Historically, Inter Milan were mainly supported by the elite and AC Milan were supported by the city’s working class. However, the class differences have long since faded away, and you will not encounter hostilities among their supporters as are often evident at the top rivalry matches in England.

Inter Milan also call Juventus one of their top rivals, and their games are dubbed the Derby d’Italia.

Stadium

Both Inter Milan and AC Milan call San Siro, officially known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, their home ground. The venue has a capacity of 75,923 making it the largest stadium in Italy.

Opened in 1926, the stadium has hosted games at both the 1934 and 1990 World Cups, three Champions League/European Cup finals, and will host the opening ceremonies for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The stadium has seen numerous renovations throughout its history, the latest in 2015-16.

In 2019, both Inter Milan and AC Milan announced their intention to build a new stadium to replace San Siro. The proposed 60,000-seat stadium will sit next to the current stadium, and is projected to be open for competition after the 2026 Winter Olympics.
