History
The club was formed in 1898 when Sutton Guild Rovers F.C. and Sutton Association F.C. agreed to merge. After years in the junior leagues, Sutton United became a senior side in 1910 and actually won the Southern Suburban League the very first year they joined.
They spent 1922 to 1986 between the Athenian League and the Isthmian League, then they first earned promotion to the National League (then the Football Conference) for the 1986-87 season. They yo-yoed a bit until winning their fifth Isthmian League championship in 2010-11, putting them in the Conference (now National League) South.
That season, Sutton United had a 25-match unbeaten streak and were crowned champions and promoted to the National League. Sutton spent five seasons in the National League before their league championship in 2020-21 put them in the Football League for the very first time. Perhaps their biggest claim to fame was in the 2016-17 FA Cup, when they beat Leeds United at home in the Fourth Round, then hosted Arsenal in the Fifth Round.
They lost that one, 0-2, but were on national television and noticed all over the football world. Going into that game, Sutton were 17th in the National League and Arsenal were fourth in the Premier League, 105 places apart on the English leagues pyramid.
In 2022 they actually flirted with the playoff spots for a while before finishing eighth; they also made but lost the League Trophy Final, making for quite a first season in league football. Their second season in league football wasn’t quite as exciting, ending in a 14th-place finish. The following season they finished 23rd and were relegated back to the world of non-league football.
2024–25 SEASON: 12th in the National League, 1st Round FA Cup
2025–26 SEASON: National League (relegated in 2024)
Rivalries
Sutton’s historical rival is Carshalton Athletic, as both clubs are located within the London Borough of Sutton. The teams have faced off in three different leagues and in 12 different Cup competitions, but the Us are now two levels above the Robins, who toil away in the Isthmian League.
Sutton also shares close proximity to AFC Wimbledon, and Sutton were the (rebooted) Dons’ first-ever opponent in 2002.
And finally, there’s old foe Bromley; when both clubs had 3G playing surfaces, their games were dubbed El Plastico.
Women's Team
The Sutton United Women play in the London and South East Women’s Regional Football League; that’s tier 5 of the pyramid. They also play at Gander Green Lane.

Stadium
Gander Green Lane is officially known as the VBS Community Stadium and opened in 1912. The current capacity is listed at 7,032. We, like most people, will continue to call it the wonderful Gander Green Lane.
It looks like a non-league ground pieced together over the years–because it is. The main Grandstand was built in 1951, and its red and blue seats are not Sutton’s team colors; they were donated by Chelsea when Stamford Bridge was remodeled. Around one end is a set of curved terraces, reflecting the former presence of an athletics track. Opposite the Main Stand is another terrace that doesn’t quite align with the pitch, and next to that is a structure with a few tables and a tin roof, and on the other side a small block of seats. It’s all kind of awesome.
A mural to commemorate Craig Dundas’ 400th appearance for the club in a 2–0 home win over Dartford on January 23, 2016 can be seen on the side of a terrace next to Rose’s Tea Hut (a food stand named for the lady who operated it for over four decades). It shows Dundas celebrating a goal with the number “400” in bold black letters, along with the phrase, Dundo’s gonna get ya!”
When they made the Football League for the first time and were required to install a grass field, that was paid for by Crystal Palace FC, who women’s team plays there.
TOURS: None
Going to a Game at Sutton United
GETTING THERE: West Sutton is a station right by the ground and on the ThamesLink service from London Blackfriars. The main Sutton Station is a 20-minute walk away but in the middle of the food and drink action; that one is reached via the Southern Service from Victoria Station, and you can get from there to the ground with bus 80 toward Hackbridge.
PUBS: There is a very friendly bar at the ground that also features Jenny’s Kitchen offering basic football ground fare.
GRUB: As with pubs, there’s nothing else near the ground. Look for all of that in the High Street near Sutton Station.
AROUND TOWN: Sutton is a fairly affluent borough in South London with a nice High (main) Street and shopping area. Along that road is a pub called the Winning Post, which in 1963 (when it was the Red Lion) is where the Rolling Stones were “discovered.” Today it’s a pleasant area with all the usual food chains and pubs.
Sutton United Tickets
For adults it’s £17 to stand, £20 to sit.
