What is the UEFA Europa League?

The world of soccer is organized into regions, each of which contains multiple countries with their own leagues. Within each region, there are competitions among both clubs and countries. Countries compete for World Cup qualification as well as regional competitions. In Europe, the latter is the European Championships, or Euros; in South America it’s the Copa America, etc. (This video has a lot more on the organization of worldwide soccer.)

Each region also has one or more annual club competitions made up the best clubs from each country; in Europe, whose region is called UEFA, the top competition is the UEFA Champions League. The Europa League is the No. 2 such competition in Europe, for the second-tier teams from top leagues and top teams from lesser national leagues. There is also a No. 3 European competition called the Europa Conference League.

Typically, the fifth-place English Premier League club qualifies for the Europa League, along with the winner of the FA Cup; this is what is meant  in England by “getting into Europe.”

Europa League Dates for 2024-25

Starting with the 2024-25 season, the format of the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League will change significantly. Check out this blog post to see those changes.

Preliminary and Qualifying Rounds

The 2024-25 UEFA Europa League will begin in July 2024 with three qualifying rounds, each consisting of two legs:

• July 11 and 18
• July 25 and August 1
• August 8 and 15

These rounds don’t include any teams from the top European leagues. Those clubs join for the “League Phase” or Group Stage.

2024-25 Europa League Group Stage Dates

The draw for the 2024-25 Europa League Group Stage will take place on August 30, 2024. The 36 teams will be organized across four groups of nine and every club will face two teams from each of the other pots. After 8 games, the top 8 will move on to the round of 16 and teams ninth to 24th will go into a play-off round which sees each tie play out over two legs. The play-off winners also make it to the round of 16 while the losers go to the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The 2024-25 Group Stages dates — all Wednesday and Thursday evenings — are:

• September 25-26
• October 3
• October 24
• November 7
• November 28
• December 12
• January 23
• January 30

2024-25 Europa League Knockout round play-offs

The Europa League Knockout Stage begins with the Knockout round play-offs on February 13, 2025. Play-off games — one at each club’s stadium — will be played on the following Thursday nights:

• February 13, 2025
• February 20, 2025

2024-25 Europa League Round of 16

Round of 16 games — one at each club’s stadium — will be played on the following Thursday nights:

• March 6, 2025
• March 13, 2025

2024-25 Europa League Quarterfinals

The two-legged quarterfinal ties will be played:

• April 10, 2025
• April 17, 2025

2024-25 Europa League Semifinals

The two-legged semifinal ties will be played:

• May 1, 2025
• May 8, 2025

2024-25 Europa League Final

The 2024-25 Europa League Final will be played May 21, 2025, at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.
