Real Oviedo History
Real Oviedo was founded in 1926 after the merger of Stadium Ovetense and Real Club Deportivo Oviedo, with Carlos Tartiere appointed as the club’s first president. The team rose rapidly, reaching La Liga within seven years, and became one of Spain’s most exciting sides in the 1930s. Led by the legendary Isidro Lángara and the attacking unit known as the Delanteras Eléctricas (electric forwards), Oviedo played a fast, modern style well ahead of its time, breaking scoring records and earning international recognition before the Spanish Civil War abruptly dismantled the squad.
The war severely disrupted the club, with Oviedo unable to compete immediately after football resumed due to damage to its stadium. In the decades that followed, the club alternated between the first and second divisions, achieving notable success with a third-place La Liga finish in 1962–63, while also experiencing setbacks such as its first relegation to Segunda División in 1978. The renovation of the Carlos Tartiere Stadium for the 1982 World Cup marked an important institutional milestone, and the club added silverware with the Spanish League Cup in 1985.
Oviedo returned to La Liga in 1988 and enjoyed a prolonged 13-season stay in the top flight during the 1990s, highlighted by a sixth-place finish and qualification for European competition in 1991. Despite competitive performances and top-level stability, financial mismanagement following relegation in the early 2000s led to severe economic collapse, forcing the club down to the fourth tier and leaving its very existence in doubt.
The club survived thanks to a remarkable fan-led rescue effort, backed by former players and major investment from Carlos Slim in 2012. They were also helped because years before a young Londoner named Sid Lowe moved to town, and as a highly accomplished football journalist watching his favorite Spanish club face extinction, he sent out a Tweet asking people to invest. Here is that story:
As Oviedo gradually rebuilt and returned to the Segunda División in 2015, the story came full circle with the return of boyhood fan and academy product Santi Cazorla, a local boy who spent seven seasons with Arsenal and won Europe twice with Spain. He came back to the club on the lowest-paid contract possible, determined to help restore it to the top flight. His leadership, experience, and symbolic presence played a key role in Oviedo’s resurgence, culminating in promotion to La Liga in 2025 and ending a 24-year absence from Spain’s top division in one of the most emotional chapters in the club’s history.
2024-25 SEASON: 3rd in Segunda División, promoted via playoffs.
2025-26 SEASON: La Liga (since 2025)
Real Oviedo Rivalries
The Asturian Derby is the name given to matches played between Sporting de Gijón and Real Oviedo. The first match between the two came 100 years ago in 1926 when the two main clubs of Oviedo combined to create Real Oviedo.
Over the decades, the derby has been marked by both sporting significance and dramatic moments. A tragic incident occurred in 1966 when an avalanche in the stands at El Molinón injured several spectators. In 1977, a decisive derby in Oviedo saw Sporting secure promotion to La Liga, ushering in one of the most successful periods in their history. The rivalry continued into the modern era, with Oviedo winning the last top-flight derby in 1998, a season that ended with Sporting’s relegation and the final derby at the old Carlos Tartiere.
Following Oviedo’s financial collapse and drop to the lower divisions in the early 2000s, the rivalry was temporarily interrupted. The teams reunited in competitive play in 2017 after a 14-year gap, a match overshadowed by crowd disturbances but ending in a draw. Subsequent meetings have reflected the derby’s enduring intensity, including fixtures played behind closed doors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout its history, the Asturian derby has remained one of Spanish football’s most passionate and historically charged rivalries.
Real Oviedo Women's Team
Real Oviedo Femenino can trace its history back to 1980 when México-La Corredoria CF was formed to play a friendly. The club was later renamed in 2001 to Oviedo Moderno CF.
They became a founding member of the unified premier league in 2001, though they generally finished in the lower half of the table. After relegations in 2008 and 2011, the club spent several seasons in the Segunda División, narrowly missing promotion through the play-offs before returning to the top tier in 2012–13 due to a vacant league spot. Oviedo Moderno remained in the Primera División until relegation in 2016. In 2017, the club reached an agreement with Real Oviedo to adopt its name and colors, marking the beginning of its full integration into the men’s club structure.

PUBS and GRUB: There is very little near the stadium, so do your pregaming in the center.
AROUND TOWN: Oviedo’s history dates to the 8th Century, and there is a rich architectural heritage from the Middle Ages. Here is the city’s official tourism guide.
