Rich the Villan
For many years I’ve dreamed of seeing an Aston Villa match at Villa Park.
With the help of Groundhopper, I was able to fulfill that dream on March 22. 2026. In fact, the experience even surpassed those dreams!
I took the recommendation of the Groundhopper Guide and took a tour of the classic, beautiful Villa Park the day before. It was a wonderful way to get a feel for things before matchday, which allowed me to enjoy and appreciate my match experience even more.
Not Just Villa Tickets — a Villa Win!
The ticket that Groundhopper helped me get was great, with a perfect view of the pitch and crowds. (Note: Rich was in the Trinity Road Stand at Vila Park.)
To top things off, Villa played well on an afternoon when a win was really needed, and my two favorite players scored in the 2-0 victory over West Ham.
A Special Bonus: Meeting Villa Players
After the match I was lucky enough to get a close picture of one of them and a picture WITH the other!
There’s a spot at the stadium where the players come out and head to the player’s parking lot. Most just wave and move on, but a couple came up to the security barrier to sign autographs. There were a few hundred fans waiting, lots of families, which was nice.
After an hour and a half or so, security left and the barriers came down, but I noticed John McGinn hadn’t come out yet. I had heard from a Villa podcast I like that he’s the sort of guy who often meets fans, takes photos, and signs things after a match until everyone is satisfied–especially for kids. A good dude and class act.
I had nowhere I needed to be, so just waited. Another half an hour later there were only about 20 fans waiting and here he comes from behind us, laughing and apologizing that he wanted to watch the Carabao Cup match before heading home. He was amazing, took his time, joked with kids, took pictures with everyone. Even me!
If you love Aston Villa or simply want to have a classic soccer experience in one of the original, granddaddy stadiums in English soccer, go to Villa Park, enjoy the match, and appreciate that there’s a place where top professional athletes still mingle with the fans after full time.
Up the Villa!
