Serie A and Serie B, along with other levels of Italian football, are connected by a system of promotion and relegation. The top 6-8 teams in Serie A qualify for European competitions, while the bottom three go down to Serie B. The top two in Serie B go up to Serie A automatically, while the teams finishing 3-8 have a playoff for the third promotion spot.
