Introduction to Associazione Sportiva Roma

Commonly referred to as Roma, the club is based in the country’s capital. Founded in 1927, Roma have played in the top tier of Italian football for every season but one since their inception.

A.S. Roma have won three Serie A titles (1942, 1983 and 2001), nine Coppa Italias and two Supercoppas.

The club’s colors are carmine red and golden yellow, hence the nickname I Giallorossi (The Yellow and Reds). The club badge features a she-wolf, an allusion to the founding myth of Rome.

In August 2020, the club was sold to American businessman Dan Friedkin for $591 million.

A very familiar face to English soccer fans joined A.S. Roma in May 2021, as José Mourinho was appointed as the club’s manager on a three-year contract.

A.S. Roma History

A.S. Roma was founded in 1927, merging three clubs from the Italian Football Championship into one. The purpose of the merger was to form a strong rival to the most dominant clubs in northern Italy. Lazio was the only major Roman club that did not agree to merge with all the city’s teams.

The new club found early success with second place finishes in 1931 and 1936, followed by its first league title in 1942.

After World War II, Roma slid down the standings and were relegated to Serie B following the 1951 season. But they returned to Serie A the very next season and have played in the top tier ever since.

They won the league title in 1983 and again in 2001.

A.S. Roma’s Stadium, Stadio Olimpico

Both A.S. Roma and Lazio call the stadium home, and the Coppa Italia Final is held in the venue every year. The Stadio Olimpico was originally built in 1932, and underwent an extensive renovation for the 1990 World Cup. It currently has a capacity of 70,000.

Roma have played their home fixtures at Stadio Olimpico since 1953.

The first game of Euro 2020 between Italy and Turkey was contested in the stadium, as was the 1990 World Cup Final and 2009 Champions League Final.

It seems like every Italian club has plans for a new stadium, but just like many other Serie A clubs, A.S. Roma has not started construction on its proposed 52,500-seat Stadio della Roma.

A.S. Roma Rivals

Both located in Rome and both calling Stadio Olimpico their home field, A.S. Roma and Lazio play in the Derby della Capitale.

A.S. Roma also claim Napoli as a heated rival, and they compete in the Derby del Sole.
