Soccer Games I Have Seen in my Quest to Join the 92 Club

I update this post regularly with all the football soccer games I’ve seen in the UK and Europe. But why does it matter? Because my goal is to join the 92 Club, also called “Doing the 92.”

The night I (again) finished the Championship, at Blackpool FC

For more on what that means, check out this post about the world of groundhopping.

As of December 8, 2022, I have seen 198 games at 118 different grounds in the UK and Europe, including 80 of the current 92 English league grounds, all of the clubs currently in the Premier League, and 23 of 24 in the Football League Championship.

Here is my 2022-23 groundhopping plan, including my effort to finish The 92 in the English league.

Here’s how you can keep up:

I have seen the home team take 275 of a possible 594 points. That’s 1.39 points per game, about on pace to finish just above mid-table. That doesn’t seem like a great record for always playing at home! On this trip alone I have twice seen the home team go five games without a win, and at one point they won 2 in 10, scoring just seven goals in that stretch. I also saw 8 straight clean sheets, including a 0-0.

A few fun and random facts:

  • At one point in 2017, the home team had a 12-game unbeaten run. At another point in 2018, I went more than 3.5 games without seeing a goal. Earlier this year, I saw six clean sheets in seven games and three out of four that finished 3-0.
  • I’ve been to Crystal Palace seven times, and they lost six of those
  • I’ve not been to Port Vale, but I’ve seen them play, and lose, four away games.
  • I messed up on a kickoff time at Scunthorpe, arrived at halftime, then wondered if it “counted” as a ground visit. They were relegated that year, anyway.
  • Four times I have seen 7-goal games: three 4-3 home wins (Newcastle-Norwich 2016, Liverpool-Salzburg 2019, and Sutton-Port Vale 2021) and one 0-7 home loss: Beckenham Town to Stockport County in the League Cup.

The dates here are done in the American style, the results in rest-of-the-world style, with the home team listed first.

If you don’t see a competition listed, it was just a regular league game.

I listed Southampton as the home team in an FA Cup Semifinal at Wembley on 4-22-2018 because I was cheering for them and sat in their end.
